Net Zero Neighbourhoods

What are Net Zero Neighbourhoods?

The West Midlands Net Zero Neighbourhoods focus on a holistic approach to neighbourhood-scale transitions.  Our key pillars are retrofit, low carbon travel, green space interventions and local, low carbon electricity generation.  At the centre of these pillars is a deep focus on co-production, empowering citizens through co-design to create a vision for their very own Net Zero Neighbourhood.

NZN Approach

What would a Net Zero Neighbourhood in my area look like?

Our goal is to help citizens live in healthier, more sustainable homes and communities.

No Net Zero Neighbourhood is the same!  As community co-design is a core ethos in our programme, the projects delivered in each neighbourhood should be decided by the people that live there.

Our current cohort of West Midlands Net Zero Neighbourhood projects include these activities:

  • Home energy improvements, to reduce fuel bills for citizens, providing warmer and more comfortable homes
  • Air quality sensors, to help citizens live in healthier homes, without damp and mould
  • Active travel measures, to provide healthier means of travelling around the neighbourhood
  • Low-carbon travel, to increase access to public transport
  • Green-space improvements, to provide better access to improved local assets
  • Community events, to host space for citizens to design neighbourhood activities.

Where are the West Midlands Net Zero Neighbourhoods?

We are working to deliver 7 Net Zero Neighbourhoods, with 7 Local Authorities across the West Midlands.  For details, go to the Net Zero Neighbourhoods resources, at the top of the page.
