What they do: Valley House are an organisation offering a range of accommodation and community-based services for vulnerable people in and around Coventry. Services include supported accommodation for victims of domestic abuse and young parents. Established in 1977 the organisation also has a community wellbeing team.
How Thrive at Work has impacted the organisation: Thrive at Work accreditation enabled Valley House to formalise their approach to health and wellbeing and support their belief in supporting home life and work and creating a balance. Wellbeing checks/Stress risk assessments enables Valley House to be more proactive in assessing work-related mental health issues, measuring the levels of risk to staff, and putting in preventative measures as well as considering the use of their physical environment. Wellbeing action plans are put in place and normalise that is ‘Okay not to be OK’ and encouraging open conversations. The introduction of two additional ‘wellbeing days’ have allowed staff to take unplanned leave without explanation and demonstrated the commitment to staff wellbeing.
Senior managers now recognise they are in a better place to focus wellbeing on service needs and employee needs, appointing a health champion to lead on wellbeing and are considering this to be a dedicated role into the future.
“We are delighted to have achieved the Thrive at work Silver accreditation; achieving the Silver Level is validation for us that we are doing our best to support our staff around their health and wellbeing. Having this framework has allowed us to make sure we are track. We will be working hard to embed this further and look forward to striving for the Gold Level!” said Caroline Pike, Director of Operations.
