What They Do: Coventry City Council serves as the governing body for Coventry, providing essential services and shaping the city's strategic direction. Their services include education, housing, transportation, social care, environmental sustainability, and cultural enrichment, catering to the diverse needs of residents. The council's strategic objectives revolve around economic development, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. These objectives aim to foster a thriving economy, promote equality and diversity, address climate change, and encourage active participation from residents and stakeholders. Through effective governance and collaboration, Coventry City Council strives to create a resilient and inclusive city for all its citizens.
How Thrive at Work has impacted the organisation: Recognising the paramount importance of prioritising employee health and wellbeing, Coventry City Council took a strategic leap by employing dedicated health and wellbeing professionals, including a mental health practitioner, to bolster its support services. The decision was underpinned by insights gleaned from the Thrive at Work programme, which not only facilitated the Council's business case for these additional provisions but also underscored the indispensable value of such services in fostering a resilient and thriving workforce.
The introduction of health kiosks has revolutionised the way employees engage with their health, offering convenient access to vital health information and prompt referrals for necessary medical interventions. The subsequent adoption of healthier lifestyle choices by numerous employees is a testament to the programme's efficacy in inspiring positive behavioural change and mitigating health risks.
The Council's efforts to enhance support and communication channels have not gone unnoticed, particularly among staff stationed within depots. Heightened engagement with senior management has fostered a culture of openness and collaboration, helping the workforce to feel empowered and supported in making informed decisions about their wellbeing.
The holistic impact of the Thrive at Work programme extends beyond individual wellbeing to organisational resilience and productivity. The support and education available to employees to support stress-related conditions and sickness absences, coupled with the systematic review of policies to ensure alignment with the Council's wellbeing strategy, underscores the transformative power of prioritising employee welfare.
Adam Munslow, Senior Wellbeing and Ergonomic Lead said “It has been a challenging journey at times, but worth the effort.”
Susanna Chilton, Director of HR said "I am exceptionally proud of how Health, Safety and Well-Being have risen to the challenge of Thrive , thinking creatively about how we develop our offer to meet employee need as well educating the organisation about the benefits to looking after yourself. This shows the efforts they have made and the impact on the workforce. The collaborative work with HR colleagues , trade unions and Public Health has been part of that journey."
