EQUANS

How its developing solutions that support the energy transition

EQUANS is the UK’s largest provider of district and community heating and cooling schemes, with over 30 years’ experience of operating and managing some of the largest and most technically demanding energy schemes.

With heat supply capacity of over 600MW, EQUANS serves users in public, commercial, industrial, and residential sectors by way of delivering exemplary customer service, allocating market leading engineering and operations teams, and differentiating through innovation.

EQUANS is a key consortium member of a BEIS-funded hydrogen innovation pilot project and is installing an Ammonia to Hydrogen Cracker at the Tyseley Energy Park. This project will demonstrate enabling technology that facilitates offsite remote green hydrogen and ammonia production using renewable sources to be transported to where it is needed and converted back for end-use.

We operate two heat networks in the West Midlands. In partnership with Coventry City Council, EQUANS operates a low carbon heat network – utilising waste heat from the municipal energy from waste plant to deliver 9.5 GWh/yr to public and private sector buildings and reducing CO 2 emissions by 11,500 tonnes since 2013. In addition, the Birmingham District Energy Network, delivered in partnership with Birmingham City Council, has saved over 110,000 tonnes of carbon since 2008.

A consortium, led by EQUANS, has attracted £3.3m from InnovateUK as part of the prospering for the energy revolution programme to fund the Zero Carbon Rugeley project. This will detail design a smart local energy system that considers the built environment, mobility, networks, generation, flexibility and the community with the aim of getting Rugeley to operational net zero by 2030 for the existing town of 25,000 people.

Working with the University of Keele on their energy needs, environmental and academic research objectives, the Low Carbon Energy Generation project (LCEG) will integrate the optimal blend of renewable technologies to drive cost-effective zero carbon measures as part of their wider smart energy network.
