3 signs you're bored at work

We’re all familiar with the concept of feeling overworked – you’re constantly tired, there aren’t enough hours in the day to relax, and each deadline comes around faster than you can say the word ‘stressed.’

But what we don’t so often talk about, is having the time to feel bored at work.

There are many reasons why boredom can creep in, and the underproductivity that comes with it could be detrimental.

That’s why we’ve rounded up the top signs to look out for if you might be experiencing ‘boreout’ (yep, that’s like burnout except we’re talking about extreme boredom) and more importantly, a great way you can try to fix it.

We’ll give you a hint: you might want to check out our course finder.

Struggling to get started

Realistically, the only way to get work finished, is to start it.

But that’s easier said than done when you’re struggling with boredom at work.

You might find yourself procrastinating rather than beginning an important task, regardless of if its urgency.

Maybe you’re prioritising menial tasks like scrolling through your inbox, or continually adding to lists that never seem to get any shorter.

Worse, in a world where working from home is the new norm, you might procrastinate by doing something completely unrelated like putting a wash on.

At that point, you really must be bored – no one puts a wash on for the sheer joy of it.

There are ways to try and break this habit: ensuring your workspace is clear of mess, eating regularly throughout the day, and attempting to break your tasks down into manageable chunks, so that an end goal is always in sight.

However, if lifestyle adjustments don’t work to get you off the mark, then you might just be bored of your job.

So, why not retrain in something you love?

Our funded courses offer anyone the opportunity to learn at no cost, leading you towards a job that inspires you.

Taking the leap to learn something new could land you with newfound enthusiasm, and a brain so brimming with ideas that starting a task can’t come soon enough.

You’re easily distracted

Distractions are all around us – usually we know when to resist them, and when a bit of office chatter won’t hinder our progress.

When you’re bored at work, however, even the smallest of distractions is enough to grind your productivity to a halt.

  • Do you pick up your phone every two minutes?
  • Do you get involved in, or initiate, most conversations with colleagues?
  • Do you get up to make hot drinks a slightly excessive number of times?

Yeah, you might be easily distracted.

But it’s okay, we’re not judging – and here’s how you can rediscover that laser focus on your work: knowledge!

Knowledge means ideas, ideas mean confidence, confidence means pride in your work… and well, you get the gist.

By up-skilling and building on your knowledge, you could find the spark you’re looking for to ditch the distractions, and crack on – and our funded courses can get you there.

Lack of organisation

We’ve all been there – that dreaded moment when you realise you’ve accidentally missed a meeting.

If missed meetings and deadlines become frequent though, this could be a sure sign that you’re bored at work.

Instinctively, you might take less care over a job that you’re feeling less than inspired by.

While it would be best practice to jot down meeting times and keep a log of deadlines, a victim of ‘boreout’ may neglect to do any of this.

We’ve mentioned the benefits that training on one of our courses could have for your knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for work, but a funded course could also provide you with some much-needed organisational structure.

With criteria to meet in order to be successful, taking on a qualification could help you to rediscover the importance of organising your work, and get you back on track.
