University vs Apprenticeships

After leaving sixth form/college, deciding your next steps can be a very difficult process. University and apprenticeships are two very different paths with differing experiences. Which route is best for you?

University

University is the most popular option amongst students. According to UCAS in 2021. "272,500 UK students aged 18 have been accepted into University or College so far this year, a 7% increase on 2020 and a new record".

It is easy to see why students are naturally inclined to attend university as their next step. Earning a degree in a subject they're passionate about whilst having the opportunity to live somewhere else is an exciting prospect. It encourages and builds independence, and it's also the first major stepping stone in building their career.

University also has an amazing social aspect. Not only will you be in classes with people who have the same passion in the subject as you, but there are also tons of societies of clubs. There is lots of chances to make new and potentially life-lo friends.

Joshua Gomez, a law graduate from the 'University of Birmingham' described his university experience as "life changing".

"University gave me the tools to become more independent. Even though COVID affected my experience, I would never change it".

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are courses where you can earn whilst learning in the workplace. Apprentices also study for a qualification, spending a day at college or university out of their work hours during the week. There are different levels of apprenticeships, which equate to different qualifications.

Apprenticeships are now becoming more and more common, with companies wanting to use apprentices to invest in their workforce, to give them the correct skills and experience necessary in order to become a full-time employee. There are benefits to both the apprentice and employer, which is why more big-name companies have implemented apprenticeship schemes.

Apprenticeships are amazing for careers. They give you the confidence needed to succeed in any role.
