Five tips for nailing video interviews for apprenticeships

When applying for apprenticeships, many organisations now use video interviews instead of doing them face-to-face. This is to filter out candidates early in the process.

Video interviews may seem scary at first! However, with some preparation, they will become easier.

Here are five tips from real apprentices to help you feel confident and stand out in video interviews.

1. Practice

This may seem obvious; however, for most people, it does feel unnatural talking into a webcam. With the right amount of practice and preparation, video interviews will start to become easier, which increases your chances of acing them!

2. Read your video invitation carefully

It is essential that you read all the details provided to you in the invitation, so you know exactly what to expect in the interview. For example, the invitation may specify things such as how many questions to anticipate, if there is a time limit when answering questions and when the interview will finish.

3. Dress appropriately

Even though you'll likely be at home when doing your interview, It's still very important to dress smartly, even if it's just from the top upwards. This shows the employer that you are passionate about the role, and it also helps you stand out from other candidates. So, feel free to keep your slippers on, but getting into the mindset in your best outfit will boost your confidence, give a great impression to the employer that you are ready for the working environment and boost your chances of acquiring the apprenticeship.

4. Make sure your equipment is working

There would be nothing worse than working hard to prepare for a video interview, only to discover your equipment is not working. Before beginning your interview, make sure you test your camera and microphone. If your camera and microphone are faulty, make sure you purchase new ones.

5. Choose a suitable location

Choosing a suitable location is very important. A quiet room with good lighting is highly recommended. This ensures that distractions are kept to a minimum, which allows you to fully concentrate on your answers. The good lighting also allows you to be clearly visible. Some candidates are automatically rejected if they cannot be heard or seen properly.
