Five tips for acing apprenticeship assessment centres
An assessment centre is an important final stage when applying for an apprenticeship. Employers use these to test your skills and ensure you're a good fit for the role. Assessment centre tasks can vary depending on the apprenticeship, for example, it could be a presentation, role play, case study analysis or group task.
Assessment centres don't have to be scary! Here are some tips to make sure you ace your assessment centre.
1. Be yourself
The first and arguably the most important tip is to be yourself. It may be tempting to create a false persona to impress employers, however, not only is that lying to them, but it is also lying to yourself. Employers might even see through this, which hinders your chance of getting the apprenticeship.
2. Research
It is hard to prepare for assessment centres since employers are purposefully vague on the specifics of the tasks until the day. However, the best advice is to research about the company and their values. Not only does this give you more information about the organisation, but it also shows your attributes as a potential employee of the company.
3. Engage with other candidates in an appropriate manner
Engaging with other candidates is a key skill that employers look out for, especially in group tasks. While getting your points across is important, it is equally as effective to ensure that every single candidate has the opportunity to speak. This demonstrates teamwork and confidence, qualities which impress employers.
4. Dress smart
Dressing smart is great for first impressions. Even if the company has a relaxed dress policy, dressing professionally to an assessment centre shows the employer that you are passionate about the role, and it also makes you stand out from other candidates. Even if the assessment centre is virtual, still do your best attempt to dress smart to give your best chance of gaining that apprenticeship.
5. Keep track of time
In assessment centres, employers will give a time limit for tasks. This is to assess your time management. It is important that this time is managed effectively, as it shows you can work effectively under pressure. To be a productive team member, offer to be the timekeeper of the group. This shows the assessors that you are organised and time efficient.
Apprenticeship assessment centres are a great opportunity to showcase your skills and meet likeminded individuals who want to pursue a career in the same field. It's key to remember, even if you are unsuccessful in passing this stage, the knowledge and experience you gain is worth participating alone.
