Marshire Bynoe

Apprentice Award

In search of a more secure career after being made redundant during the Covid-19 pandemic, Marshire fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a mechanic through a Level 3 apprenticeship with Sandwell College and Direct Line Group.

"I chose my apprenticeship because I wanted to prove my academic ability as well as my practical skills, and show my children that you can always change your path if you invest in yourself.

"At the beginning of my apprenticeship, I didn’t know anything about mechanical, electrical or car trim. Now, my employer trusts me to complete intricate and complex tasks that aren’t typically given to an apprentice. At Sandwell College, I can develop my leadership qualities by assisting in teaching the apprentices skills I have picked up in the workplace.

"This career change has set me up for life and I’m now confident I can provide for my family. My mental health, self-esteem and confidence have all improved, and the job has also made me physically fitter and given me more energy throughout the day.

"It’s my intention to stay in employment with Direct Line group. I want to upskill through management programmes at Sandwell College, alongside industry training in new green regulations to improve the impact  cars are having on the environment."

Rebecca Clarke, Head of Business Affairs, Events and Communication at Sandwell College, said: “Marshire has been a standout learner at Sandwell and we are incredibly proud of our part in his journey. We hope he can inspire more adults to change their career pathway and improve their life chances through apprenticeships."
