What does the WMIZ mean for you and the economy?
The WMIZ is a 10-year strategic initiative designed to address the region’s long-standing economic challenges and unlock inclusive, sustainable growth. Embedded within the West Midlands Growth Plan (2025), the WMIZ serves as a key instrument - though not a standalone solution - for driving regional transformation. Its core mission is to tackle economic structural weaknesses, boost productivity, and build long-term economic resilience across the West Midlands.
To catalyse growth, the WMIZ focuses on high-value strategic sites. These locations are designed to act as innovation hubs, supported by cross-cutting interventions including supply chain development, skills training, and innovation funding. These efforts are closely aligned with the Plan for Growth’s recommended actions and tailored to the region’s unique economic landscape. The capital sites are positioned around leading research institutions in the West Midlands, and collectively cultivate vibrant ecosystems where research, commercialisation, and entrepreneurship converge.
Currently, tangible outputs are geared towards the first 5 years (to 2029). The next phase of the WMIZ 2029 – 2034 (and beyond) is still in development, however, we can expect it to support:
- The delivery of over £1.5 billion of business rate uplift over the IZ’s 25-year lifespan.
- Major economic growth right across the region through new development and deeper business opportunities.
- Securing £8.8 billion in capital investment from investors to the sites.
- The IZ sites are to be fully operational and occupied.
- Regional supply chains and innovation ecosystems to be stronger and more resilient.
