The Creative Content Production and Gaming Cluster is a vibrant collective of dynamic sectors including film, television, games, animation, high-end TV, branded content, vlogger/influencer content, VFX, immersive technology, and other creative content businesses.
Spearheaded by Create Central, industry, public sector and individuals have identified five priority areas that would benefit from Create Central action and provide the most effective interventions to enable us to reach our vision for the West Midlands creative content sector of 2030.
Opportunity
By 2030, we envision the West Midlands as a globally renowned hub for storytellers and creatives, characterised by a flourishing creative ecosystem.
Our strategy includes leveraging the full economic and social benefits of the region’s Memorandum of Understanding with the BBC, alongside similar commitments with major content commissioners.
We aim to:
- Encourage additional public and private investment in areas like the Digbeth creative quarter.
- Drive cross-sector R&D collaborations, building on existing initiatives such as the West Midlands Create Growth Programme and CoLab.
- Develop a West Midlands IP Content Fund to accelerate the growth of IP-rich creative firms.
Regional Competitive Advantage
The West Midlands is firmly establishing itself as a pivotal region for the creative industries, evidenced by the emergence of strong local brands now rooted in the region, such as Digbeth Loc Studios, Kudos/Knight, NorthOne, and Optomen.
Our competitive edge is further enhanced by:
- Significant investments like the BBC’s new regional headquarters, which will host shows like MasterChef and Silent Witness, and the £18m Creative Content Hub at The Bond, Digbeth.
- The launch of a new £5m Screen School at the University of Wolverhampton.
- The prominence of Silicon Spa, centered in and around Leamington/Warwick, where the gaming industry stands as a major economic force; this area is ranked first for its economic contribution relative to other industries.
- Being the first UK region to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the eSports Federation, a milestone that was highlighted during the Commonwealth Games.
As we continue to foster these developments, the West Midlands is poised to become the ultimate destination for creative content production, attracting talent, investment, and recognition from across the globe.
Join us as we shape the future of creativity!
