Sharon Thompson appointed Deputy Mayor of the West Midlands

Richard Parker, the Mayor of the West Midlands, has named Birmingham councillor Sharon Thompson as the region’s new Deputy Mayor. 

Cllr Thompson was appointed to the post at a meeting of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) Board in Wolverhampton this morning (Friday 14 June) 

Her role as Deputy Mayor will see her support the Mayor in delivering the region’s key priorities and act as an ambassador for the West Midlands.

Cllr Thompson entered Birmingham city council in 2014 and has been a prominent national voice on housing and homelessness, lobbying government over the Grenfell cladding payouts and on social house building. She also sat on the Commonwealth Games 2022 Members Advisory Group.

Her appointment follows previous roles with the WMCA including portfolio holder for Levelling Up and Devolution, membership of the Housing and Land Delivery Board, WMCA Public Service Reform Board, and chair of the WMCA’s Homelessness Members Advisory Group.
