First images of ultra-rapid EV charging stations

As part of our commitment to EV charging infrastructure and the aim for the region to be net zero by 2041, we are searching for nine sites to build and launch a portfolio of ultra rapid charging stations suitable for cars and light commercial vehicles.

The Project

To help support the current provision of lower capacity charging, the WMCA is focused on launching an initial portfolio of nine Transit Stations, occupying prime locations on, or near to the West Midlands Key Route Network, creating a portfolio of purpose-built facilities with ultra-rapid chargers and a drive-to, similar in appearance to a traditional petrol filling station.

Research has confirmed the lack of visible facilities for EV charging is potentially affecting confidence in the EV market and a barrier to buying electric vehicles. Additionally, ultra-rapid charging is required to support growth in the West Midlands and a portfolio of Transit Stations across the region will help drive change for businesses and residents alike.

We are now actively searching for suitable land across the region, ideally located on or near to the Key Route Network, to purchase and build nine ultra rapid charging stations.

We are looking for land that meets the below criteria:

  • Freehold sites purchased at a competitive price
  • Circa 1.0 acre (larger cleared sites and demolition opportunities will also be considered)
  • Development land, or sites with existing vacant buildings, or short term investment assets to be cleared
  • Arterial routes and prominent junctions
  • Daily passing traffic flow of circa 20,000 vehicles
  • Ideally all mains utilities, including an initial power supply of 1 MW
